What's included in an entry and hallway clean
Entries and hallways carry more traffic than any other part of a house and get the least attention. They are also the first thing anyone sees. Here is what a cleaner does in yours.
How a hallway is actually cleaned
A hallway is mostly touch points and floor edges. Door handles, light switches, the front door itself and the frame around it are handled by everyone who comes and goes, which makes them the highest-contact surfaces in the house and the ones most obviously skipped when a clean is rushed.
The floor problem in a hallway is the edges. Traffic pushes grit and dust toward the skirting, so a hallway vacuumed down the middle looks clean and has a visible grey line along both sides. Vacuuming along the perimeter, then mopping, is what makes the difference — and it is why hallways are done after the rooms feeding into them rather than before.
Entry mats hold more than they appear to. They are taken outside and shaken rather than vacuumed in place, because vacuuming a loaded mat mostly moves grit into the carpet underneath it.
The surfaces everyone actually touches
Front door, handle, lock plate, doorbell, light switches and power points cleaned and sanitised every visit. They are the highest-contact surfaces in the house and the first thing dropped when a clean is rushed.
The part visitors judge the house on
An entry sets the impression of every other room. Skirting dusted along the top and spot-wiped where scuffed is the single change that makes a hallway read as properly cleaned.
Ten minutes that changes the whole run
Hallways are quick, which is exactly why they get skipped. Vacuuming the perimeter rather than the centre removes the grey line down both sides that no amount of mopping fixes.
Standard scope
Included in every hallway clean
These tasks are done on every visit as part of the standard rate. They are not add-ons and they are not dropped when the visit runs long.
Front door, inside and out. The internal face of the front door wiped down, the external face spot-cleaned, and the handle, lock plate and doorbell cleaned and sanitised.
Door frames and architraves. Wiped down and dusted along the top edge, where the grey line builds up unnoticed until light hits it.
Light switches and power points. Sanitised throughout the entry and hallway. In most homes these are the dirtiest surfaces nobody looks at.
Skirting boards along the run. Dusted along the top and spot-wiped where scuffed, which is the single change that makes a hallway read as properly cleaned.
Entry mat. Taken outside and shaken out rather than vacuumed in place, then the floor underneath is cleaned before it goes back down.
Cobwebs and light fittings. Cobwebs removed from cornices and the entry ceiling, and reachable light fittings dusted.
Console tables, hooks and shoe racks. Surfaces dusted and wiped, hooks and rails cleaned, and items cleaned around and put back where they were.
Floors, edge to edge. Vacuumed along the perimeter as well as the centre, then mopped if hard floor. The front step is swept.
Add-ons
Deep-clean work, quoted separately
Real work that takes real time. It is priced on its own rather than folded into an hourly rate and then skipped when the clock runs out.
Wall spot-washing. Scuff marks and hand marks along a high-traffic hallway wall removed. Quoted as part of a deep clean, because paint finish determines what is safe to use.
Interior glass and sidelights. Entry glass, sidelights and screen doors cleaned both sides at ground level.
Stair edges and risers. Stair nosings, risers and the carpet edges cleaned. Slower than flat floor and worth adding rather than absorbing into a routine visit.
Under-stair and entry storage. Wiped out and dusted through. Part of a deep clean or an end-of-lease clean.

- Pressure washing a porch, path or driveway
- Cleaning external windows above ground level
- Removing paint marks, scuffs that have gone through the paint, or wall damage
- Garage or shed cleaning
- Anything requiring a ladder taller than a two-step
- Rearranging shoes, coats or belongings

What helps before we arrive
- Move shoes and bags off the entry floor so it can be cleaned rather than cleaned around.
- Say if the front door or a hallway wall has a finish that needs a specific product.
- Point out any existing scuffs or damage so nobody wonders later whether the cleaner caused them.
- Let us know about the entry access arrangement — a locked gate can cost fifteen minutes of the visit.

Do you clean the front door?+
Yes. The internal face is wiped down every visit and the external face is spot-cleaned, along with the handle, lock plate and doorbell.
Do you clean walls?+
Marks are spot-cleaned where the paint finish allows. Washing a full wall is deep-clean work, and on some paint finishes a wet cloth will burnish the surface, so we check before we start rather than after.
Are stairs included?+
Stairs are vacuumed as part of the floors. Detailed work on nosings, risers and carpet edges takes noticeably longer and is better booked as an addition.
Do you sweep the front porch?+
The front step is swept as part of a standard visit. Pressure washing a porch, path or driveway is a different job with different equipment and is not something we take on.
Why does the hallway look better after your clean than after mine?+
Almost always the edges. Traffic pushes grit toward the skirting, so vacuuming down the centre leaves a grey line on both sides. Vacuuming the perimeter first is what changes it.
