What's included in a kitchen clean

The kitchen takes the longest of any room in a routine clean, because grease behaves differently to dust. Here is what a cleaner does in yours, what sits behind an appliance door and costs extra, and how long it takes.

How a kitchen is actually cleaned

Kitchen cleaning is mostly about degreasing, and degreasing needs dwell time. Product goes on the cooktop and the splashback early so it can break down the film while the cleaner works elsewhere, then it comes off in one pass. A cleaner who sprays and wipes immediately is moving grease around rather than removing it, and you can tell within a day because the surface attracts dust faster than it should.

Benches are cleared where it is reasonable to do so, cleaned and dried. Dried matters: a bench wiped and left wet dries with streaks and water marks, particularly on stone and dark laminate. The same applies to the sink and the tapware, which is why they are polished dry rather than rinsed and left.

Everything behind a door — inside the oven, inside the fridge, inside the cupboards — is deliberately outside a routine visit. Those three jobs together can take longer than the rest of the kitchen combined, so bundling them into an hourly clean means something else gets dropped. They are quoted separately, and they are standard in a deep clean or an end-of-lease clean.

Grease removed rather than spread

Degreaser goes onto the cooktop and splashback early and comes off in one pass. Spraying and wiping in the same motion moves the film around, and you can tell within a day because the surface picks up dust faster than it should.

Behind-the-door work priced openly

Inside the oven, the fridge and the cupboards are quoted separately, because together they take longer than the rest of the kitchen. Folding them into an hourly rate only means something else gets dropped.

The longest room, given the time

A kitchen runs 30 to 45 minutes on a routine visit and closer to 75 on a first one. Rushed, it produces a kitchen that looks clean and feels tacky.

Standard scope

Included in every kitchen clean

These tasks are done on every visit as part of the standard rate. They are not add-ons and they are not dropped when the visit runs long.

Benchtops and splashback. Benches cleared where practical, degreased, wiped and dried so they do not streak. The splashback is done to the underside of the overhead cupboards, where the grease film is heaviest and least visible.
Cooktop and range hood face. Cooktop degreased, including around and under the trivets on a gas top. The range hood face and its filter housing are wiped; filters themselves are an add-on because they need soaking.
Sink and tapware. Sink scrubbed, the drain and plughole cleared, taps descaled, and the whole assembly polished dry rather than left to spot.
Appliance exteriors. Fronts, handles and sides of the fridge, dishwasher, microwave, oven door and small appliances wiped down. Handles get particular attention — they are the greasiest surface in most kitchens.
Cupboard and drawer fronts. Doors and drawer fronts wiped, with the areas around the handles cleaned properly instead of skimmed. Insides are left alone unless you have booked a deep clean.
Microwave inside and out. The microwave is the one appliance interior included as standard — turntable out, cavity wiped, door seal cleaned.
Bin, inside and out. Bin emptied, the liner replaced, the lid and the rim wiped, and the bin itself wiped down. Rubbish and recycling go out to the kerb bins.
Floors, including the toe-kick edge. Vacuumed then mopped, with the strip along the cupboard toe-kick done rather than skipped because it is awkward. That edge is where kitchen floors visibly age.

Add-ons

Deep-clean work, quoted separately

Real work that takes real time. It is priced on its own rather than folded into an hourly rate and then skipped when the clock runs out.

Inside the oven. Racks out and soaked, the cavity treated and the door glass cleaned between the panes where the model allows. Allow an hour or more; this is the single longest kitchen task.
Inside the fridge and freezer. Shelves and drawers out, washed and dried, the interior wiped and the seals cleaned. Best booked when the fridge is fairly empty.
Inside cupboards and the pantry. Emptied, wiped out and restocked as found. Standard in an end-of-lease clean, an add-on otherwise.
Range hood filters. Filters removed and soaked to strip the grease rather than wiped in place. Add-on because of the soaking time.
Dishwasher interior and filter. The filter cleared, the seals wiped and the interior treated. Worth doing roughly twice a year and the usual reason a dishwasher starts to smell.

Emptying or reorganising the pantry as a decluttering job
Moving the fridge or oven out to clean behind them
Cleaning the inside of a rangehood duct
Anything requiring an appliance to be disconnected
Removing burn marks, heat damage or scratches from a benchtop

What helps before we arrive

Clear the benches of paperwork and mail — cleaners will not move documents, so anything left there gets cleaned around.
Do the washing up or stack it in the dishwasher unless you have booked the time for it.
Say if you have a stone, timber or induction surface that needs a specific product.
If you want the oven done, tell us at booking — it needs its own hour, not a slice of an existing one.

Is cleaning inside the oven included?+

Not in a routine clean. The oven door and the exterior are wiped every visit; the inside is an add-on because it needs an hour on its own. It is included as standard in a deep clean and an end-of-lease clean.

Do you clean inside the fridge?+

As an add-on, yes — shelves out, washed, interior wiped and seals cleaned. On a routine visit only the outside is done. Book it for a day when the fridge is not full.

Will the cleaner do the dishes?+

If you ask for it and the time is allowed for. On a fixed-scope clean, time spent washing up comes out of something else, so it is better to say up front which you would rather have.

Do you clean the range hood filters?+

The hood face is wiped every visit. The filters themselves need to come out and soak, so they are an add-on rather than part of the standard scope.

How do you handle stone benchtops?+

With a pH-neutral product, not an acidic or bleach-based one, which can etch or dull a stone surface permanently. If you have a particular product you use, leave it out and we will use that instead.

Do you move the fridge to clean behind it?+

No. Appliances stay where they are — the floor risk and the damage risk are not worth it. If you move it out yourself before the visit, the cleaner will do the floor and the wall behind.

Why does the kitchen take longer than the other rooms?+

Because grease needs time to break down before it wipes off, and because a kitchen has more distinct surfaces than any other room. Rushing it produces a kitchen that looks clean and feels tacky.
